Officials in Davis, California have lifted an overnight shelter-in-place order that was issued after a knife attack occurred late Monday. This was the third such attack to happen within a week, following two fatal stabbings near the campus of the University of California, Davis. The order was put in place after the Monday stabbing, which left a woman in critical condition. The previous attacks resulted in the deaths of University of California, Davis senior Karim Abou Najm on Saturday and 50-year-old David Breaux on Thursday, both of which occurred at different parks near the campus.

In response to these violent incidents, the university’s chancellor, Gary S. May, announced on Tuesday that all classes ending after 6 p.m. would now be conducted virtually. He also encouraged all clubs and student activities that met after that time to do so virtually as well.

Authorities are sifting through hundreds of tips but have yet to definitively link the three violent attacks that occurred in Davis, California over the past week. According to Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel, the attacks were “particularly violent and brazen.” He also noted that the suspect or suspects in the second homicide and Monday’s stabbing both interacted with witnesses, indicating bold behavior that is concerning to the police.

The most recent attack took place at a transient camp near 2nd and L streets, where a woman reported being stabbed and is currently in critical but stable condition in the ICU at UC Davis Medical Center. The suspect was not found despite a detailed search of downtown by the Davis Police Department overnight. The suspect is described as a thin man with curly hair and a light complexion, between 5’6″ and 5’9″ tall, wearing a black or blue sweatshirt, black pants with white stripes, and carrying a brown backpack.

The descriptions of the suspects in the first and third attacks are “substantially similar,” according to Pytel. The suspect in the first attack is believed to be a light-skinned male between 19 and 23 years old, possibly Hispanic, with long curly hair, between 5’7″ and 5’8″ tall. The FBI has joined state and local law enforcement in the manhunt for the suspect, and every agency within the county is involved with help from neighboring jurisdictions.

Investigators are analyzing physical evidence and combing through tips, which have risen after police provided a description of the attacker. Pytel noted that they are looking for DNA evidence to help identify the offender, and physical evidence has been submitted to crime labs in hopes of finding a common thread. There is no city surveillance or video showing any of the attacks.

III. Third stabbing reported, suspect resembled UCD student’s assailant

Witnesses described the suspect as a light-complected male with curly hair, between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-9 with a thin build, wearing a black or blue sweatshirt, black Adidas pants with white stripes, and black shoes. He carried a brown backpack and was last seen running westbound on Third Street from L Street.

Isaac Chessman and Christine Berrios, an unhoused couple, were neighbors of the victim and awoke to sounds of rustling, followed by their friend, Kim, screaming for help. Larry, another neighbor, was able to knock the suspect down but he fled the scene. Kim was coherent following the assault and sustained wounds to her hip area.

The shelter-in-place order was issued as offices from multiple law enforcement agencies conducted searches of surrounding neighborhoods with drones and K-9 units, but the suspect eluded capture. Davis police urge people to be aware of their surroundings and travel in groups if they must be out at night.

Monday’s attack was the third in Davis since last Thursday, including the stabbing death of 50-year-old David Henry Breaux in Central Park and the fatal stabbing of UCD student Karim Abou Najm in Sycamore Park. Police have arrested a person of interest in Najm’s killing but have not connected the three attacks.

The Davis police have planned a press conference to provide updates on their investigation. The unhoused community is concerned about being targeted, and witnesses reported they called the police hours before the stabbing but received no response.

IV. Victim had told his sister to ‘forgive the perpetrator’

Karim Abou Najm, the 20-year-old University of California, Davis student who was fatally stabbed, was returning from an undergraduate award ceremony when he was attacked. His family described him as a “bundle of energy, a bundle of positivity” who was full of ambition and proud of his roots. Abou Najm was a computer science major with a bright future and had many opportunities for research and internships, according to one of his classmates, Chipman.

David Breaux, the first victim of the recent attacks, was known as “Compassion Guy” in the Davis community. He regularly asked passersby about their views on compassion and had been on a lifelong quest to develop a collective definition of the word. Breaux’s sister said that he had chosen to live outside in an area of Davis where he felt safe but had expressed concerns about potential threats and urged her to forgive any person that may harm him.

The death of Breaux and Abou Najm has left the Davis community devastated, with many who knew them expressing their grief and sharing their memories. Davis Mayor Will Arnold called Breaux’s death “utterly and completely devastating,” and many people spoke of their personal connections to the victims.
